This building has been a pub since 1880, sitting on Dale Road in the small Derbyshire village of Stanton by Dale, between Ilkeston and the Erewash Valley. It's the kind of place that takes a bit of finding — and that's exactly the point. The beer garden backs onto open countryside, the kitchen cooks everything from scratch, and Ken the Harris Hawk keeps an eye on the grounds.

Homemade. Every time.
The kitchen makes everything from scratch. The slow-cooked lamb shank with minted gravy has a bit of a following, as does the homemade chicken & mushroom pie — served with triple-cooked, hand-cut chips and a proper jug of gravy. Food needs to be booked in advance; it sells out most weekends.

There's a small touring caravan and motorhome site tucked behind the pub — hard-standing pitches with grass at the side and a picnic bench on each. Walkers and ramblers exploring the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire borders find it ideal. Ten minutes from the M1, very little noise.
