Stanton by Dale, Derbyshire

A village pub since 1880.

Proper homemade food, hand-pulled ales, and a beer garden that earns its reputation — tucked into the village of Stanton by Dale, just ten minutes from the M1.

Est. 1880

145 years in the same village.

This building has been a pub since 1880, sitting on Dale Road in the small Derbyshire village of Stanton by Dale, between Ilkeston and the Erewash Valley. It's the kind of place that takes a bit of finding — and that's exactly the point. The beer garden backs onto open countryside, the kitchen cooks everything from scratch, and Ken the Harris Hawk keeps an eye on the grounds.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 from 254 Google reviews, and voted second most dog-friendly pub in the East Midlands. Food needs booking in advance — walk-ins welcome for drinks.

From the kitchen

Homemade. Every time.

The kitchen makes everything from scratch. The slow-cooked lamb shank with minted gravy has a bit of a following, as does the homemade chicken & mushroom pie — served with triple-cooked, hand-cut chips and a proper jug of gravy. Food needs to be booked in advance; it sells out most weekends.

Also on the menu: beer-battered fish & chips · homemade steak pie · Cumberland pork sausages · beef lasagna · Philly sirloin ciabatta · hot drinks

"This place is a little gem. The landlady Sue was really down to earth, lovely lady. Staff are friendly. Lovely little campsite too — we stayed 2 nights and Sue came to check everything was OK. Would definitely recommend a visit."

"What a wonderful experience. The people running the pub and site could not have been more welcoming. The food on both nights was fantastic. Lovely inside and brilliant beer garden. Only 10 minutes from the M1 for peace and quiet. PS that's Ken!"

The touring caravan site behind the Chequers Inn

Stay a while

Touring caravan site on the grounds.

There's a small touring caravan and motorhome site tucked behind the pub — hard-standing pitches with grass at the side and a picnic bench on each. Walkers and ramblers exploring the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire borders find it ideal. Ten minutes from the M1, very little noise.
