Our story

A village pub that's been here since before your great-grandparents were born.

The Chequers Inn has stood on Dale Road in Stanton by Dale since 1880 — that's 145 years of wet boots at the door, locals on the same stools, and evenings that stretch longer than intended. The village sits in the Erewash valley between Ilkeston and the Nottinghamshire border, quiet enough that strangers notice it, close enough to the M1 that you can be back in your normal life in ten minutes when you have to be. The Chequers has always been the kind of place that makes that journey feel optional.

The building has its own character and it shows. Low ceilings, worn wood, a bar that's seen more good conversations than most living rooms. The kitchen has always done things properly — pies made here, not delivered in a box; lamb that takes the whole afternoon to get right. Sue and the team keep the food on a short, honest menu that changes when the seasons do, and food needs booking in advance because the kitchen cooks it fresh. That's not a sales line — it's just how it works, and the people who've found this place seem to appreciate it.

Then there's Ken. Ken is a Harris Hawk who lives in the pub grounds and is, by most accounts, the most talked-about regular we've ever had. Dogs are welcome too — the Chequers was voted second most dog-friendly pub in the East Midlands, which the dogs seem unbothered by but the owners appreciate. The beer garden spills out back in summer; the caravan site behind the pub has become a steady spot for walkers, ramblers, and anyone who wants a proper night's sleep with a pint within twenty yards.

254 Google reviews averaging 4.6 out of 5 — not bad for a pub tucked down a country lane in Derbyshire. The guests who leave reviews tend to call it a hidden gem, which is either a compliment or a navigation note. Either way, if you haven't been, it's worth the detour off the A609. And if you have been, you probably already know you'll be back.
